Last week, on the six-month anniversary of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, a whole new round of reforms became law. They included eliminating the denial of coverage to children with preexisting conditions, eliminating lifetime limits on benefits, eliminating the ability of an insurance company to cancel a policy retroactively without proving fraud, guaranteeing a patient's right to appeal the denial of a claim, guaranteeing free preventive services, such as screenings, vaccinations and counseling, giving middle class families a break by allowing young adults to stay on a parent's plan until the age 26, giving patients the choice of primary care doctor, obstetrician/gynecologist and pediatrician within a provider's network, and guaranteeing the right to use the nearest emergency room without penalty.
